Thank you for connecting the sleeping disciples with our/my response to the place where Jesus is in today's world. Really a brilliant and moving essay that I hope will be in a book soon!
I happened upon this during my hours of reflection today, Good Friday, after having spent time with Borg and Crossan's The Last Week. It touched me very much. Thank you.
Bonhoeffer's call to participate in suffering instead of avoiding it, extends to all creation and we see it in the care animals have for one another, and for other species. This concern for others might be an essential part of our nature. It was Paul Ricoeur who wrote a phenomenal work, entitled Oneself as Another, in which he posits that we first have our subjectivity, and come to know ourselves, through the 'other'. The 'other' is a precondition for our having an authentic identity, and is part of our divinely created nature.

I loved this Tripp, I got a little teary eyed during this. Well done! I wish you peace.
Thanks Lori
Tripp- There isn’t a better perspective to view today than that of Bonhoeffer. Thank you for sharing these profound thoughts. God be with you!
Thanks Gordon
Dear Trip, thank you so much for a very moving, very relevant message for me, for all those who follow you, for the world, for today. Margaret
A beautiful, moving reflection!
Thanks!
This is SO good. Thank you for such a relevant and meaningful reflection this Easter weekend. It is a more important message now than ever!
Thanks!
Tripp: I stumbled on this episode during a Good Friday bike ride.
Such EXCELLENT and RICH stuff…thank you.
I wrote a similar essay for Maundy Thursday, plumbing the depths of (arguably) the 20th Century’s other great martyred figured in Christendom: Romero.
I was fascinated how many of the themes were similar.
Thanks for all you do…blessings.

Excellent. Reading through the Henri Nouwen book Following Jesus this week. It has a strangely similar message and is also moving and challenging.

Excellent paper! And so relevant to the current disturbing situations in our midst.
