"True Believer" Documentary Film Screening + Q&A with Director Kristen Irving
Livestreamed on Monday, July 1st (9:15am PT / 12:15pm ET)
Hello friends!
We’ve been given the special opportunity to livestream an important new documentary entitled TRUE BELIEVER where an evangelical filmmaker reckons with the political identity she built her life on…as her faith community betrays the Jesus they taught her to love. After the film, we’ll host a Q&A with Director Kristen Irving!
The documentary features interviews with Diana Butler Bass, Randall Balmer, Julie Ingersoll, Lisa Sharon Harper, Mel White, and more!
Born in 1981 just as the Religious Right's culture war crashed into visibility, a then evangelical filmmaker discovers the true origins of the pro-life movement. While disbelief initiates her investigation into a veiled history of white supremacy, betrayal forces a deeply personal examination of her own family and identity, neither of which can be disentangled from the other. As Roe is overturned and abortion bans become routine, TRUE BELIEVER is a call for reckoning for every American, but especially those within the religious subculture that threatens our very Democracy.
By the way, this film screening is part of our current online course entitled "Faith and Politics for the Rest of Us" where Dr. Diana Butler Bass, Dr. Tripp Fuller, and Tim Whitaker are bringing together a number of alternative theo-political visions to introduce a multiplicity of vibrant, yet neglected traditions in public theology.
God is not an American, Jesus loved his enemies, and the Spirit continues to speak life into and beyond the church.
Our contemporary public square is increasingly chaotic, toxic, and repulsive. Yet, our challenges as a people, nation, and species are growing. The rise of Christian Nationalism repulses a growing number of Christians who have a hard time thinking and speaking from a more vibrant theological vision.
