Hey Theology Nerds,
If you haven’t heard, we just lost John Cobb, and Philip Clayton will join me for a conversation to celebrate his life and thought.
JOHN COBB REMEMBERED
Monday, December 30th (4pm PT / 7pm ET)
Join the livestream on YouTube (or watch the replay on the same link).
My relationship with John started when I read one of his books that changed my life. Then, I got to take a summer school class with him in Claremont before Divinity School. When I moved to LA for my PhD, he invited me and my family to lunch. Over the years in SoCal, we had many meals and conversations together. We have recorded over 30 hours of conversation and taught two classes together. Beyond being a creative, brilliant, and ground-breaking scholar, John was a deeply passionate and compassionate disciple of Jesus. When friends ask about his picture with me, I say "That's John freaking Cobb, and he's my Gandalf." The last time we got to hang he introduced me as his friend.
See you on the livestream.

I'm sorry I won't be able to participate (I'm visiting with family). I was at STC from 1969-78, getting Rel.M., then 3rd year, then Ph.D. Early on, I was fascinated by John. He was the only one who understood my dissertation. We did become friends and I continued to learn from him. What I say to people is that when I was a part of any conversation with him, my IQ would go up 20 points. This phenomenon is due to the power of physical feelings (or causal efficacy). Blessings and appreciation for what you are doing.
Such sad news, I'm deeply sorry for your loss and others as well. I'm grateful you'll be sharing his life with us tomorrow. I'll make every effort to be present.
Peace to you.
